Earnings Roundup - March 2018

So, can you make money from survey and GPT sites? Each month I'll show you what I made the previous month, explain a little about the sites and apps I used, and keep a running total for the year.
Here's the total so far:

January 2018 - £327.88
February 2018 - £203.73

So, March 2018

After a quiet February, march started out pretty well - I took about a week off in total due to work stuff, but other than that stuck to an hour or so a day.

Let's see how things went...

Swagbucks

Swagbucks is my favourite site, probably because it was the first one I joined, and it's the one I make the most from.. It's mainly video apps, surveys, clicks, offers, trials etc. If their advertisers aren't paying much  then there's not always a lot to do. I don't like doing surveys, so I rely on the video apps (which I can leave running while I do other things) and other parts of the site to earn. Some days in March I didn't even get the chance to do that, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had managed to cashout £115 in March.

In addition to this, one of the surveys I did on Swagbucks gave me the chance to do a telephone survey which netted me £100! These don't come up all the time but when they do, they're nice.

InstaGC

I love InstaGC because there's a lot of opportunity for passive earnings (ie not having to do anything). I mainly run videos on here, there are 4 streams of videos to run and I run them all as often as I can. There are also surveys and offers, the same as Swagbucks, and a lot of the surveys are short, which I like. 

It was quiet at the beginning of the month as there weren't many advertisements on the video streams and I had problems running a couple, so I didn't make as much as I usually do. Add to that the days off and I was happy to have cashed out $171.28 to Paypal, which worked out at £120.83

Branded Surveys 

Branded Surveys, which used to be called Mintvine is a bit of an acquired taste these days but I kind of like it. I don't earn as much as I used to from it, but I stick with it because it pays for my Pizza Express addiction.

Like the others, it's surveys and offers - no video options anymore, which means actually DOING something on the site, which is one reasonI don't make as much these days.

In February I cashed out £20, in Pizza Express vouchers. You can also cash out to Paypal, Tesco, Amazon etc, but I use it purely for Pizza Express for a nice treat every month.

You can sign up to Branded Surveys by clicking here - new members tend to get some good surveys for big points and little effort so definitely worthwhile.

Prolific Academic 

Prolific is purely a survey site, but as it's an Academic site the surveys tend to be really interesting and sometimes even fun. There's sometimes an option to earn bonuses, but in general they're one of the better paying survey sites. The only dowside of this site is that they don't email you when a survey is available, so you have to check the site regularly and as such it's easy to miss out on surveys / studies. Payment ranges from pence per study to pounds - in the past I've done stuides worth £16, £20 and more.

Newbies on here tend to get a lot of studies - in my first month I made over £100. This tapers off after a while, and that, combined with the fact that I didn't have a lot of time to be checking in March meant that I only made £16.39 - must try harder!

Minor Earners

I have a few phone apps and other sites that I also use that take up very little time, and I can do while in the car (as a passenger!), watching TV, waiting for the kettle to boil, in queues in shops etc. 

CitizenMe

Short (4 or 5 questions usually) surveys that pay small amounts immediatelyto Paypal. You'll have to search your app store to find it and it's never going to make you rich but every little helps! March earnings - £0.82

Attapoll

Another app that sends out surveys every couple of days - there seem to have been quite a few in Feb so I was able to cashout £5.14. They pay to Paypal within a couple of hours.

You can get Attapoll by clicking here - it's pretty straightforward and will alert you when there is a survey available.

Panelapp

One of the easiest apps I have - simply log in each day to gain points. Occasionally there are short 1 question surveys, usually based on where you have been using data from your GPS. It's most definitely not a big earner, and you can only cash out to Amazon, but I had enough points to cash out £7 this month. You can get Panelapp here.

OnePulse 

Another app with quick surveys - 2 or 3 questions mostly so very quick. There are paid and unpaid surveys - the more of the unpaid ones you do the higher your payment for the paid ones. I cashed out $5 on this one this month, which worked out at £3.71

Imutual

This is a new one to me. They have cashback offers and daily free clicks. Just by joining and clicking a few times I made £1.25 in March. I'm going to try and remember to do this one every day in April, so we'll see what the free clicks add up to when I do the next roundup!

Total

So that means that March 2018 came in at  £390.14 - not that great, but not that bad either. Hopefully April will give me more passive earnings and a higher total.

That's £531.61 from January - Feb, plus £390.14 in March, making a running total of £921.75 so far this year.

Hopefully April will be better!

One of the easiest ways to make money on sites such as Swagbucks, Prolific, InstaGC, Branded Surveys and more is to build up your referrals.

In most cases you'll earn a percentage of the earnings your referrals get, in some a set fee per referral.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest gripes over in my Facebook group for users of Get Paid To / survey sites is that it is so hard to get referrals. And it can be. Unless you develop a system.

I've been affiliate and referral marketing for over 25 years, although only in the past couple of years have I focused on GPT sites.

With this in mind I've decided to combine the two areas of knowledge for 2018 with the launch of the 30 Day Referral Challenge.

Prolific Assistant - Get alerted to new studies on Prolific

One of the biggest gripes in our Facebook Group about Prolific is the lack of studies, or missing out on studies. Unfortunately, Prolific doesn't send emails alerting people of available studies, and they often fill up very quickly meaning that no matter how often you check in, you're always just missing out.

There are various options out there to remedy this problem, but the easiest option on a desktop / laptop is the Chrome extension Prolific Assistant.

The Prolific Assistant is a plug in to the Chrome browser that alerts you either by an audible signal, a desktop alert, or a counter on the plugin icon, when there is a study available.

They say:

This is an extension designed to monitor https://www.prolific.ac/ for new studies and alert you when it finds them. 

Features

- Displays your pending and available balance
- Desktop Notifications: Receive a desktop notification when a new study is found
- Icon Badge: Shows how many studies are available on the extension icon
- Check Interval: Will check for new studies every X seconds
- Announce: If this is enabled, a voice announcement will happen when a new study is found
- Last Checked: Shows the last time studies were checked

How do I install the Prolific Assistant?

First visit the Prolific Assistant page and click on Add to Chrome, top right:

When the pop up appears, click Add Extension:

The extension will install and a Prolific icon will appear to the right of your address bar:

Clicking on that icon will bring up this:

You can either leave the Check Interval at 5 minutes, or change it (I have mine set to 2) - leave Announce highlighted so that you will be alerted when there are studies:

When a study appears, simply click on it to be taken to the study page, where you can then apply to join.

As I said earlier, it's not foolproof, but I do think it's worth having it installed as it gives you extra chances to see studies you may have otherwise missed.

I'm still looking for viable options for Smartphones and am testing out a couple of options - keep your eye on the Facebook Group for updates on this.

An open letter to Prolific Academic

*** EDITED TO ADD: Credit where credit is due, Prolific reached out to me not only here but also on Reddit, Facebook and by PM and email, and their response was brilliant. They hadn't removed posts on Reddit at all, there was a delay in them showing and I jumped the gun - sorry guys! I have to say they've been fantastic in trying to resolve this - the referral system is back up and running and it sounds as if they have a lot of great plans ahead, so I'm perfectly happy to continue recommending them as one of my top 3 earners :) ***


Hi, I've been a Prolific member for some time and a great advocate of your platform. While your referral system was working I sent over 160 referrals to Prolific. However I notice that as of around the end of July, your referral system stopped working. Considering that since the 1st August I have gained 157 Swagbucks referrals (http://nikkersuk.blogspot.co.uk/2017/08/the-end-of-summer-may-be-here-but-you.html) and over 200 Mintvine referrals (https://mintvine.com/users/register/d800dcae12047d0653eeaa9e5) I reckon I have missed out on AT LEAST 100 Prolific referrals. All of this with no notice from you guys that the referral system wasn't working.

And then, upon being informed that there was an error, you inform us that the referral system has been disabled! How is this acceptable to loyal members that are promoting YOUR platform?

But it doesn't stop there. This morning I notice that you have changed the referral links for members to gain referrals - again without notifying us. Not only this but you actually got the link wrong in your own system! Maybe you should tell your techy guys how to spell 'participant'? Many people are now sharing incorrect referral links, which not only makes them look stupid and makes you look unprofessional (it gives a 404 error), but also wastes everyone's time.

I'm shocked and saddened at how badly you have treated your loyal members and until something is done about this there is no way I can promote your website to the 50,000+ members of Facebook groups I admin.

I can't log in to Prolific - what should I do? (minitip)

Recently, Prolific updated / upgraded the front page of their website and it seems that since that has happened, a number of people are having problems logging in, especially on their smartphones.

Having read a number of these posts in our Facebook Group, here are a couple of things to try:

1. Go into your email and find an email from Prolific - click through to the site from there and then click 'Account' - this should take you to your account page without you having to login.
2. Go direct to the login page - prolific.ac/participant/account - and login as usual - this should redirect you to the old login page.

If neither of these things help, the best thing to do is contact them via support@prolific.ac and explain the issue you're having.

Hopefully it's going to be a short lived thing and everything will be sorted out soon.

Prolific minitip - What can I do if my survey is rejected?

Prolific - a few comments recently that studies have been rejected - here's what Prolific say on the subject:

A researcher may reject your work if they believe that some answers you gave are wrong, the study was not completed correctly or that the instructions were not followed. If you believe that your submission was rejected in error, you may decide to contact the researcher directly. You can easily do this via our messaging system. Under "Manage Studies", just click on the researcher's name to send him/her a message.

Sneak preview: We are currently developing certain mechanisms to make Prolific a fairer platform. In the future, researchers will have to go through a rejection justification process, i.e. they will need to specify (in a message to the participant) why exactly a submission needs to be rejected. Also, we'll introduce partial payments, so even if a submission is not entirely satisfactory to the researcher, he/she can still choose to pay a partial compensation.

So what to do if your study is rejected? In the first instance get in touch with the researcher via the messaging system and find out why you were rejected. If you disagree, argue your case politely and courteously and you may find that the researcher changes his/her mind. If all else fails and you're sure you shouldn't have been rejected, go direct to Prolific and plead your case.

Prolific minitip - your Prolific score

Some people on our Facebook group  have mentioned their Prolific score - here's what Prolific say in their FAQs:

The Prolific Score is a a score that's based on the quality of your submissions. The better and more accurate your submissions are the higher your Prolific Score will be and the more studies you'll receive!

Everybody starts off with a clean score of 100/100. However, if there’s an issue with your submission and it gets rejected, then your Prolific Score will go down a bit. But do not worry! We have designed this new mechanism with care. For your first 10-20 submissions your score won't get affected strongly by rejections. Also, time-outs or returns won't affect your prolific score in any way.
With this step, we hope to increase the quality of our platform, so more researchers have an incentive to use Prolific.

You can find your Prolific score under the 'manage studies' section of your Account and it should look like this:

When will I receive my cashout?

You've completed the surveys, watched the videos, subscribed to the offers and the time is finally here to cash out - you've made money and you're excited to receive it!

But when will you receive your hard earned Paypal payment / gift voucher? Many thanks to our Facebook group admin Jade for putting together this list of cashout times for the most popular sites and apps.

How I make £300 a month from survey sites and apps with minimal effort

This post was written in July 2017 - my routine has changed a little since then, look out for an updated post soon!

Over in our Facebook group people have been asking how I can possibly earn so much from apps when I claim I spend so little time on them (implying something? ;) ) so this post is to explain and hopefully help a few people out. It's a very quick and dirty post so there are no screengrabs or pretty pictures in it. It is quite long though, please read to the end before asking any questions x

Throughout the post there will be links to the various sites and apps highlighted in green, and in the main they will be referral links. There will also be links to other posts that might help you out.

OK, so...

I'm an early riser - my alarm goes off at 5am and the first thing I do is switch on the radio and get back into bed :)

Then I follow this quick routine (I've numbered things for ease of reference)

1) I start with my phone apps - first I check Attapoll for any surveys and check my balance and cashout if neccessary (less than a minute)

2) I then check VYPR for any steers that have come in overnight and any cashout (less than 2 minutes)

3) Next is Citizen.me (check your app store) where I do a couple of the non earning surveys and any paid ones - this cashes out automatically so I don't need to check that (2 minutes)

4) After that I check OnePanel (check your app store) and do any non paid and paid ones, and of course check if I can cashout (2 minutes max)


6) I check Tipps and leave a quick review for a local restaurant, just ticking boxes and giving stars, no typing involved (1 minute)

7) Lucky leftovers is next - I've set this up to send max texts to each competition so all I do is check if I have a cashout (30 seconds)

8) People.io (check your app store) usually has some quick questions to answer so i do those now (30 secs)

9) Panelapp (check your app store) just adds points for checking in so that's another 5 seconds

10) I check Shopprize  (no longer open to new users)to get my daily login bonus, see if I have any referrals and cashout if necessary (I don't scan receipts so 15 seconds max)

That's all my non Swagbucks phone apps done in less than ten minutes while I listen to the news

Then...

11) I set the Swagbucks SBTV app running videos. I have favourited all the ten second ones and run my favourites list. I leave my lovely warm bed and jump in the shower. By the time I get out I've made another 10sb on SBTV, maybe more if it's run bonus rounds too.

12) I then set EntertaiNow TV Swagbucks video app running, choose 'short clips' and leave it while I go and make coffee, breakfast and packed lunches. While I'm in the kitchen I fire up the laptop and...

13) I set Swagbucks ToolbarTV going on the website

14) I also look to see if there are any autorun Ncraves that can run while I make and eat breakfast

15) By the time breakfast is over, EntertainNow has run so I start Sportly (another Swagbucks app) while I do housey thing like load the washing machine, do the washing up, water the garden etc.

16) I check into the Facebook group and approve any posts, new members and answer any queries

17) By now it's 7 o clock and the rest of the house is leaving, so it's time for another coffee :)

18) I check in on Mintvine and Prolific to see if i have any cashouts on there. I do the daily poll  on Mintvine. If there are any short studies on there (under 10 mins) I might do one or two, but I don't do this every day.

19) Sportly has finished now so I load up Lifestyle TV and set that running on short clips

20) I check the Facebook group again and check whether there are any short Gold surveys on Swagbucks (on laptop). I also set another Ncrave going if there is one

21) I then mooch about in the Facebook group until 8am when Swagbucks starts again, hopefully I'll have run the Indy music swagbucks app too by then, but I don't always.

It's now 8am and active time on Swagbucks is a maximum of 15 minutes (if I've done a survey) Let's say another 10 mins each on Mintvine and Prolific if i've bothered to do studies on there.

22) So now I set SBTV Swagbucks app running again and start the process of running the apps again - I don't watch the videos, I don't babysit them. I just let them run until they've finished and then start the next one.

23) I spend a lot of time in the Facebook group helping people out, while also administrating my other groups (some of which I do for fun, some of which clients pay me for) and Facebook pages, and also writing blog posts for clients. I might occasionally do a quick Prolific survey if I think it's worth it, and I also try to complete my Swagbucks to do list.

I work for the rest of the morning. At lunchtime I check all my phone apps again.

Throughout the day Ncraves are running where possible and Watch is running on another tab in my browser. The Swagbucks apps are running on my phone or tablet. I don't have to do anything except move them on occasionally, which I can do in a second because I'm working online anyway.

To my routine I've added InstaGC, which I mainly run videos or throughout the day (more on this another time, but sign up and PM me on Facebook and I'll help you out).

And that's it! Unless someone posts a tasty Prolific study in the group and I can take a break, I don't do anything else other than mooch in the FB group, work for clients and the occasional foray out into the garden.

In the evening I have the usual household stuff to do - walk the dog, make dinner, clear up, make sure everyone has clothes for the next day, bath and bedtime etc. Then I can sit in front of the TV, all the while Watch has been running. Ncraves has finished by this time unless i'm really lucky :)

I watch TV with my partner, or do stuff in the garden. If I'm watching TV I might do the occasional survey on my phone, but that's it. If someone in the group mentions a decent Discover on Swagbucks I'll do that too, but I don't worry about Discover as long as I've reached my daily goal.

Weekends the before 8am routine is probably the same, then I just set apps and Watch running on Swagbucks and do normal family weekend stuff.

So, as you can see, although it seems like I spend all day doing this stuff, my actual active time is not a lot. I might do VYPR steers in front of the TV, but that's no different to playing Candy Crush or reading a book, which is what I would be doing if not doing this.

Some days I do nothing apart from the apps as I don't have the time or I get distracted by work. I'd say at least one week a month I do nothing on Swagbucks.  Yet throughout my apps and sites, in May I made over £300, August over £500. I'll update this post when I get a minute with the actual figures for each month but the total between Jan and September is well over £2500.

Prolific checklist - have you done all of this?

If you're signed up to Prolific and a member of our Facebook group then the chances are you've asked in there why you're getting no surveys :)

Here's a quick and easy checklist to go through to make sure you have the best chance of getting / seeing surveys on Prolific and making some easy money.

1) Make sure you're signed up as a Participant, not a Researcher

2) THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! Make sure you have completed your prescreening questions - if you haven't then you won't see surveys as the site has no idea if you qualify for them. I can't stress enough how important this is - 90% of people in our group that say they have no studies have not filled out these questions - they take a while but are vital. Click on the link in green to get to your prescreening questions. (NOTE: These are NOT the same as the initial questions you answered when you signed up - there are LOTS of them and without them, you'll get no surveys) If you are on a mobile and click the above link you may have to scroll down on the page it loads to see the questions.

3) Make sure you check the site regularly - Prolific is slightly unusual in that the site doesn't email you when studies are available, you have to check in regularly. (Also see Hannah's Distill web monitor post in the FB group as this will alert you to studies if you're online on a PC/laptop/Mac)

4) Keep an eye on the Facebook Group - members often post when they see studies come up on Prolific and you can then check to see if they're in your Studies area.

5) Recheck your Prescreening questions every so often - depending on new surveys, new ones come up all the time so it's worth checking in every few days to see if you have any new ones.

6) If it's been a couple of days and you've done all of the above, yet still have no studies, then it is worth contacting Prolific. It seems that occasionally an account gets put on unofficial 'hold' and the only way to give it a kick and start getting studies through is to contact Prolific direct. You can do this via the 'Contact Us' button on the top right on the desktop version of the site.

A few other questions we get asked:

How long does it take for study fees to be approved?

This depends - some studies are approved immediately, some take a few weeks, others anything in between. If your fee hasn't been approved after 21 days, Prolific will automatically approve it for you.

What's the minimum cashout?

Minimum cashout is £5, but there will be fees. Above £20 there are still fees on Paypal, but no fees on Circle. Fees are detailed on the cashout page (best to check there for up to date fees as they may change)

How long does cashout take?

Again, anything from a couple of days to a week or so - I've not had any payout go more than 8 days

How much can I earn?

Depending on how many surveys you get, this could be a good earner. From mid March to now (22nd June, I've made over £221. Others have made more, so it's well worth doing.

Prolific - Interesting surveys and an easy moneymaker

One of my newer addictions in the world of survey sites and apps is Prolific and if you're not a member you really should be! The surveys (or studies as they call them) are really interesting and nothing like the usual ones we see on Swagbucks, Mintvine etc, the payments come in quick and fast and the minimum cashout is £5 to either Paypal or Circle.

I did my first study on 8th March 2017 and today is 2nd May 2017 and so far I've made £77.38 with very little effort:

The problem is (or the problem as I see it from comments in our Facebook group) that it's not very intuitive and so people are giving up on it without giving it a chance.

So here's a quick and dirty guide to getting going and making some half decent money in a very decent time.

1) Sign up

Firstly, visit the Prolific website and create an account. IMPORTANT - sign up as a Participant, NOT a Researcher or the rest of what I say here won't make much sense :) 

I'm not going to walk you through signing up and verifying your account as the site does that for you, but if you have any problems, feel free to pop along to our Facebook Group and ask - there's always someone around to help.

2) Complete the prescreening questions

This is the part that most people are missing out on and it's not obvious. In order to be offered studies, you need to have answered some prescreening questions.

On a laptop / PC you'll find the prescreening questions under the Account link

Once you click on that you'll find a whole host of questions to answer - the more you answer, the more likely you are to be given studies to do so it's worth the time it takes - probably about 15 minutes.

On a phone it's under 'Menu' (3 lines top right)

Once you've done this, be sure to check back on that screen every few days to see if you have any new ones to answer - as new studies are added, the criteria may be different to the questions you've already answered, so it's best to always be up to date on these.

3) Check for studies

Now you need to check out the Studies page to see if you're eligible for any. The great thing about Prolific is that you are only offered studies you qualify for so a disqualification is very very rare (it DOES happen occasionally but I've only had it once in 2 months).

At first you're probably going to see this:

Don't give up! Studies come in regularly - if it's the first time you see the screen it might be worth doing the demo study just for some practice.

It'll show you what a study looks like when it comes in:

Click on Start now and see how the study process works, it'll give you practice for later.

4) Keep checking for Studies

A lot of people are expecting that like other survey sites, Prolific will send you an email when a study is available - they won't. It's up to you to keep checking. I have the study page open in a tab on my laptop browser and I periodically refresh it to see if anything is available. On your phone you might have to keep visiting the page.

Here's what a real study looks like:

You could see anything from 1 survey a day to 7 or more (my max is 7 in a day). The survey offer will tell you how much it is worth, what that works out at as an hourly rate, how long you have to do it and how long the average person takes to do it. You choose whether you do it or not.

It's a great little earner, pays out really quickly and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
